MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) – In its program “The Failure of a Samurai from Tokyo”, the Belarus 1 TV channel showed that during six years of living in Belarus, Japanese spy Masatoshi Nakanishi took over 9,000 photos from the Belarus-Ukraine border area, BelTA has learned.

Masatoshi Nakanishi photographed roads, bridges, other logistics communications, as well as military facilities. He admitted that he was fully aware that this was a crime. “I agree. I understand it. This is a crime,” he remarked.

“The first stage of the operation was accomplished successfully,” retired Major General, Head of Military Counterintelligence in 2008-2012, expert in countering foreign intelligence services Aleksei Zakharov said commenting on the activities of the Japanese agent in Belarus. “The Japanese entered into a fictitious marriage with a Belarusian citizen, opened a commercial entity that he used as a cover for his frequent trips to the border area and adjacent territory. Two accounts were opened in his name. One of the accounts was credited multiple times, and the other was unlimited.”

The Japanese used the pseudonym Masa in his correspondence. Two channels of communication were used - the main one and the backup one, and the backup channel was arranged through the Embassy of Japan in Minsk.
